AA

By 1946 as the
Alcoholics Anonymous

Membership grew, confusion and disputes within groups over practices, finances, and publicity led Wilson to write the guidelines for noncoercive group management that eventually became known as the... Twelve

POWERLESS AND UNMANAGEABLE

Step One: To become "Humble", is a quality not at all natural for an Addictive personality!  "Surrender" to Powerlessness and Unmanageability, requires giving up the most treasured thing in life, along with Rationalization and Justification!  Emotionally, this compares to the death of a loved one, or the failure of a marriage.  Add "Craving" and early Recovery becomes a very difficult experience, that the average person cannot comprehend.  This is the critical time when fellowship and support from a 12 Step "Peer" group is irreplaceable!  This is the fact that founders of Alcoholics Anonymous discovered!  NA puts it like this:
"Addicts helping
Addicts can achieve Miracles!"

Bill Wilson turned over the stewardship of AA to the General
Service Board.  In this era AA began its International
expansion, and by 2001 the number of members
worldwide was
estimated at
2 million.
